The Wide World of Expensive Watches

The world of fashion is such that there are times when no price is too astronomical. Instances of suits being worth half a million aren’t very uncommon, and these don’t even come close to some of the more exquisite timepieces that have been put up for sale. These exquisite creations come with price tags that aren’t meant for the faint hearted, and even the cheapest one could very well cost over a million dollars.

Expensive WatchesThe watch that currently holds the distinction of being the world’ most expensive one is priced at twenty five million dollars. The watch in question is a Chopard creation, and uses diamonds in facets like coating, studding, and encrusting this amazingly beautiful piece of accessory. The 3 pink heart shaped diamonds are 15 carats, the blue diamond weighs 12 carats, and the white diamond weighs 11 carats. Additionally, diamonds totaling to 163 carats (white and yellow) are used to coat the watch, and this brings the total diamond weight to 201 carats. Quoting an online author about the watch in question, he said, “fashionable- no; amazing- yes!”

Next in line is the Supercomplication, and this exorbitantly priced timepiece is a Patek Philippe (a Geneva based watch company) creation. This pocket watch, which was originally made for Henry Graves Jr. (the banker), has been around since 1932. This watch actually turned out to play a key role in a wager between Graves and James Packard (the automobile engineer) which revolved around who among them could lay their hands on the most intricate pocket watch. The contest was won by the Supercomplication, and the number of functions it had, weren’t surpassed for 50 years. That happened by a watch which boasted of 33 functions. Simply, as a historical timepiece and a great example of unparalleled compilation, this watch ended up selling for eleven million dollars.

The next watch is also a Patek Philippe creation and this one is pegged at four million dollars. This watch, called ‘Platinum Time’, was put on sale in 2002. Only one such watch was ever made, and true to its name, its clock face displays all the different time zones across the globe, along with the local current time. This watch incorporates all the Geneva watch maker’s expertise, style, and efficacy; and while it might be overpriced, it is also quite an artifact in itself.

The last watch on this list is a Vacheron Constantin creation, and as compared to the ones mentioned insofar, this one is actually quite a steal. Priced at a million and a half dollars, this watch, called the Tour de l’Ile, was designed to commemorate the design house’s 250th anniversary. Over ten thousand man hours of research are said to have gone in the making of this watch, and its functions do much more than tell the wearer what time it is. Its complicated features include a continual calendar, minute replacer, etc. While many of the features might seem inconsequential, they at least do their bit in justifying the price of the watch. Since there were 7 such watches made to commemorate the anniversary, they’re not particularly unique, but then, seven really isn’t very big a number.
